Former Sidekicks Owner J.L. “Sonny” Williams Passes Away

by Jessie Vilkofsky

Former Sidekicks owner, J.L. “Sonny” Williams, passed away last weekend from esophageal cancer at the age of 78. Williams and his wife Gretchen became team owners in 1996. During the span of five seasons, he shared ownership with Don Carter while remaining majority owner through 2002.

During his reign with the Sidekicks, Williams worked with Sidekicks all-star “Tatu” who is a very well-known name in the Sidekicks community. Williams, Tatu, and Gordon Jago were all working together during this time.

Not only was Williams a driving force for the Sidekicks in the late 90’s to early 2000’s, he also made his stamp in the local Dallas community with his business ventures. He and his family were well known for building Minyard Food Stores which grew to become a billion-dollar grocery business chain in Dallas. In addition to his leading role with Minyard, Williams was also a minority owner of the Dallas Mavericks.

Williams will be greatly missed in the Dallas Sidekicks community. We send our deepest condolences to his wife Gretchen, their family, and loved ones.
