Dallas Sidekicks Announce Changes To The Coaching Staff
Allen, Texas (Oct 14, 2016) — Nick Stavrou informed the team last week that he is stepping down as Assistant Coach. We would like to thank Nick for everything he did for this organization. Willie Molano will be taking over the role as Assistant Coach.
“We would like to thank Nick for all his hard work and commitment over the years while he served as both a player & assistant coach,” Sidekicks’ General Manager & Head Coach Simon Bozas said. “Last year we could not have made this transition happen without Nick Stavrou’s commitment, dedication and love for the Dallas Sidekicks.” Stavrou has been an integral part of the Sidekicks since the team returned to action in 2012.
“I’ve given this decision a lot of thought and I feel it is the right time for me to step aside,” Stavrou said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my tenure with this organization and would like to express my gratitude to the passionate Sidekicks fans, current and former players and the Sidekicks ownership. I enjoyed my time and wish this franchise nothing, but the best.”
After an amazing college career, Stavrou was selected by the Dallas Sidekicks in the second round of the MISL draft. He went on to play for 10 seasons with the team. Nick was a member of the Sidekicks MISL championship teams in 1993, 1998 and 2001, he earned second team All-PSA honors in 1998 and second team All-WISL honors in 2000. Stavrou scored 199 goals in 292 games with the Sidekicks from 1991-2004
We would like to thank Nick for everything he did for this organization. Willie has been training with the team for a few weeks now ever since Nick Stavrou informed Simon Bozas that he will be stepping down from his role as Assistant Coach.
“I’m very happy to join The Dallas Sidekicks as an assistant coach,” Molano said. “This is an exciting time for me and I’m looking forward to the challenge. The Dallas Sidekicks are a first-rate organization, and I’m very eager to get working.”
Molano was drafted by the LA Lazers, of the Major Indoor Soccer League, out of Foothill College in 1983. He played in Los Angeles until 1987 when he was traded to the Dallas Sidekicks where he helped the Sidekicks win their first championship in 1986. He went to the Tacoma Stars in 1990, than he continued his career with the Milwaukee Wave, Puebla, Mexico, Dallas Rockets and Houston Hotshots.
Molano played four seasons for the Dallas Sidekicks, 1986-1990. Molano played in 109 games, scored 36 goals and assisted 32 goals. He finished his Sidekicks career with 68 points and 88 blocks. Molano is a member of the 1986 MISL Championship team.
“We are very excited to bring Willie to our franchise,” head coach Simon Bozas said. “We believe that Willie’s core principles, leadership, communication skills and exceptional background in player development make him an ideal fit for the culture we are building in Dallas.”
We are extremely excited to have Willie Molano on the bench this upcoming season. You will see Willie on the bench for our first home game on Saturday, October 29.
