Sidekicks Fall to the Comets 9-4

by Mahonri Mendoza

Kansas City, MO (January 29, 2022) – The Dallas Sidekicks (5-7) fail to win against the Kansas City Comets (9-1) as the North Texas side loses 9-4 at the Cable Dahmer Arena Saturday night.

Saturday’s match featured the third match between these two sides, with the Sidekicks losing both encounters. The game against the Comets featured both Vazquez brothers, goalkeeper Estevan and defender Christian.

“Excited to be back to be sharing the field with my teammates,” said Estevan Vazquez. “Tough way to be back against a good Kansas City Comets side. Playing with my brother tonight was a dream come true. We grew up as best friends since we are so close in age. It was good to see him on the field rather than in the stands.

Sidekicks forward Bradlee Baladez forced a mistake with the Comets defense to hand the lead to the Sidekicks on the first three minutes of the match. Baladez scored from distance to give the North Texas side the lead to make it 2-1 with four minutes left in the clock. Unfortunately, the Sidekicks conceded a goal finishing the quarter level at two goals on each side.

Both sides attempted to score in the second quarter numerous times but were unfortunate to score. The Comets scored to lead for the first time, making it 3-2 in their favor. Lovegrove found the target for the Sidekicks to tie the game 3-3 and score his 10th goal this season.

The third quarter was challenging for the North Texas side as the Comets snuck past four goals on Vazquez. The Sidekicks attempted a few times to find the Comets’ target but could not do so. Ricardinho’s side was held scoreless towards the end of the third quarter in favor of the home side 7-3.

In the fourth quarter, with a lead over four goals, the Sidekicks conceded two more goals for the home side to lead 9-3. The Sidekicks could not produce many attacking chances until Julio Varela scored for the Sidekicks to make it 9-4.

Following his two goals Saturday night, Baladez shared his thoughts on the game:

"Give credit to Kansas City," said Baladez. "We have to go back and work hard during the week. I have to give credit to my teammates. It was an unfortunate result, and we came up short. We're a team–it's all of us together. We have to come back stronger and prove to everyone what we can do to make it to the playoffs.

"The Sidekicks return to the Credit Union of Texas Event Center on Saturday, February 5, 2022, against East Division side Harrisburg Heat (2-6) at 7:00 pm CST.
