Sonora, MX (December 4, 2019)– The Dallas Sidekicks had another loss on the road in Mexico in the 2019-2020 regular season, losing 13-5 to the Soles de Sonora. The Sidekicks next game will be at home on Dec. 14th at the Allen Event Center and will be their Home Opener.

The first quarter started with the Soles controlling the play of the ball, but the Sidekicks played a strong defensive game. Sidekicks goalkeeper Juan Gamboa started in goal and showed his veteran status with some big saves throughout the quarter. The quarter ended 0-0 and low shots on goal for both teams, but the Sidekicks looked to be working out the smaller size of the field and trying to use it to their advantage.

Both teams came out strong in the second quarter and Gamboa proved his skilled again and blocked a volley of shots from the Soles. Gamboa grabbed two tough shots out of the air to keep the score leveled at 0-0. The Soles were out of position and Sidekicks rookie Victor Almendariz scored to bring the Sidekicks into the lead 1-0 and was the second of Almendariz’s career in the MASL, his first coming in the Sidekicks previous game against the Monterrey Flash. It wasn’t long, however, until the Soles answered back with Gustavo Rosales finding a hole in the defense and sneaking one past Gamboa to level the score 1-1 early in the quarter. At 11:33 the Soles’ Irving Murillo caught Gamboa off guard and poked one in and Sonora led for the first time 2-1. The Sidekicks quickly answered with a volley of shots which the Soles’ goalkeeper Angel Rubalcava decisively saved and the quarter ended with Sonora on top.

Both teams came out strong after the first half with the Sidekicks controlling the pace and keeping possession. Gamboa continued to make clutch saves against the Soles. Then at 2:34 the Sidekicks’ Ricardinho Cavalcante snagged a goal and tied the score 2-2. Then Soles’ Enrique Cañez beat the Sidekicks defender and brought the Soles back into the lead 3-2 at 3:52. The Soles quickly grabbed another goal when Xavier Barreras brought the score 4-2 in the Soles’ favor. The Sidekicks defense weren’t able to beat the Soles down the pitch and Manuel Aragon grabbed his first of the night and brought the Soles’ lead up 5-2. The Sidekicks called a timeout and then Sidekicks player Cameron Brown cut the Soles’ lead 5-3 with a cheeky goal at 7:36 in the third. The Soles quickly answered with another goal by Xavier Barreras to bring their lead up 6-3. Sidekicks player Felipe De Sousa caught the Soles and grabbed his first goal of his MASL career and cut the Soles lead 6-4. The refs then called Cavalcante for a blue card which put the Soles on a power play and Soles’ player Xavier Barreras got a hattrick and brought their lead up 7-4 at 14:16.

The fourth quarter got off to a slow start with both teams missing opportunities to score. To stir things up the Sidekicks took a gamble and put in the sixth attacker, Cavalcante, but the Soles scored when Juan Munguia brought their lead up 8-4. The Sidekicks kept the sixth attacker in the game and Sidekicks player Frederico Moojen was able to sneak one past the Rubalcava and cut the Soles’ lead to 8-5 and Gamboa went back in goal for the Sidekicks. The celebration was short-lived for the Sidekicks when Almendariz accidently scored an own goal, credited to Gustavo Rosales, while trying to defend and Soles lead went up 9-5. The Sidekicks place Cavalcante back in goal as the sixth attacker and he made a strong save to keep the Sidekicks alive. The Soles take on Cavalcante and they sneak one past him to bring their lead up 10-5 with Jose Antonio Cruz Armenta taking his first of the night. Rubalcava then scored a goal, his first of the night, and the Soles went up 11-5 and quickly scored again when Guillermo Salazar got his first of the night and brought their lead up 12-5. With less than a minute left in the fourth quarter, Soles Enrique Cañez got his second of the night and increased their score 13-5.
