THE SIDEKICKS FALL 9-3 TO UNDEFEATED KANSAS CITY COMETS
Allen, TX (January 8, 2022) – The Dallas Sidekicks (3-4) fell 9-3 against a difficult Central Division side, the Kansas City Comets (6-0), Saturday night.
Following three straight victories for the Sidekicks, Interim head coach Ricardinho had the mission to continue the team’s fantastic form. The visiting side got ahead of the North Texan side by scoring two goals in the first quarter that took the Sidekicks by surprise.
In the opening minutes of the second quarter, Sidekicks’ midfielder Sebastian Mendez scored to cut the Comets lead and make it 2-1. Mendez scored his third goal in the season after an excellent strike that got past the Comets keeper.
The Sidekicks conceded another goal toward the end of the second quarter as the Comets extended their lead by two goals. The Sidekicks again cut the Comets’ lead after Julio Varela scored his second goal of the season to make it 3-2 with just two minutes to go in the quarter.
Both teams in the third quarter had opportunities to score a goal via numerous dangerous plays. It was not until the end of the quarter that the Comets extended their lead to three goals making it 5-2 with just three minutes left in the clock. Stephen Gonzales gave a much-needed goal to the Sidekicks to cut distances just seconds before the end of the third quarter to make it 5-3. Gonzales scored his first goal of the season.
In the final quarter of the match, the Sidekicks conceded in the opening minute to trail again by three goals as the Comets scored their sixth goal of the night. The Sidekicks were outscored in the final quarter as they conceded three more goals giving the Comets a very extensive lead and challenging for the North Texas side to get close to.
“It’s a lot of mistakes,” said Varela. “We can’t let them go that easy. We need to fight a little harder, work for each other, defend–lots of little mistakes that we can fix.”
“IT came down to effort for us,” said Sidekicks’ defender, Mike Jones. “Today (Saturday), the effort was not there. We have to go back to the drawing and figure out what spots that we were weak at–we have to band together, and these next two games, we have to focus on winning them.”
The Sidekicks return to the Credit Union of Texas Event Center on Friday, January 14, 2022, against East division side Baltimore Blast (3-1) at 8:30 pm CST.
