by Bob Heckel

Allen, TX (Nov. 4, 2016) – Following their first victory of the season last Saturday, The Dallas Sidekicks (1-0) won a thrilling home opener 10-2 against the EL Paso Coyotes (0-1) at New York Life field at the Allen Event Center ending the Sidekicks 2 game losing streak on opening nights.  This Friday, the Dallas Sidekicks (1-0) will take on the El Paso Coyotes (0-1) at 7:35 p.m. at El Paso County Coliseum. The Dallas Sidekicks' broke an arena era record last week with 55 shots on goal.

Jamie Lovegrove & Cameron Brown are sitting atop the team’s leaderboard in scoring and looking to continue their run on goals against El Paso.  The defense had a strong showing last week holding the El Paso to only two goals. Kiley Couch led the team last week in shots blocked with 3. Cody Ellis chipped in with a superb short-handed goal.  Dallas’ special teams had an outstanding performance last week, scoring two out of three power play opportunities and holding the Coyotes scoreless during their three power plays. Goalkeeper, Eduardo Macias “Choco” will be making his MASL debut against the El Paso Coyotes.

“There were a lot of positives from game one that we can take into our re-matchup with El Paso,” Sidekicks Head Coach Simon Bozas said. “We’re proud of the work we’ve accomplished in such a short time, taking it step-by-step to grow into a team with the potential for success. We’ve been working hard this week to prepare for this weeks three game, three day road-trip.”

Friday’s matchup will be the second of four meetings between the teams during the regular season. The Sidekicks will embark on a three-game, three-day road trip that includes a stop on November 4th in El Paso to face the Coyotes, a stop in San Diego on the 5th and a stop in Tijuana to face the Atletico Baja on the 6th.

The San Diego Sockers are coming off a 12-1 steamrolling of the Turlock Express this past weekend. Chris Toth was imperious in goal against the Turlock Express, saving 21 of the 22 shots he faced. Sockers’ offense is well distributed through their lineup.  On Saturday, the Sidekicks will be traveling from El Paso to face the San Diego Sockers. Since the return of the Sidekicks in 2012, the two teams have only faced five times – their last meeting taking place on February 28th– with Dallas winning one of two matchups last year.

The rivalry between the Dallas Sidekicks and the San Diego Sockers dates back to 1984. The two teams created several memorable moments in indoor soccer together, including a virtually unheard of 1-0 playoff game on May 20, 1989, and the end of one of the longest winning streaks in professional sports when the Dallas ended San Diego’s 48-game run on Jan. 27, 2013. The Sockers’ will be returning to Dallas to face the Sidekicks on November 12th for their last matchup of the season.

Sunday will mark the end of the Dallas Sidekicks road trip out west, with a matchup against the Atletico Baja. This Sunday will mark the first ever matchup between Baja & the Dallas Sidekicks. Atletico Baja are coming off a 13-4 loss to the Ontario Fury. Baja Midfielder, Cristian Gutierrez leads the team in goals with 2. Baja started Mario Escobar in goal and Escobar faced 18 shots saving only 10 of them. Baja then switched goalies midway through the game to Miguel Marin, Marin faced 7 shots only saving 2 shots. Last season was Atletico Baja first season in the MASL finishing in 2nd place in the Southwest Division, losing in the division semifinals.
